How to Adjust Your Bra for Comfort and Support

How to Adjust Your Bra for Comfort and Support

A well-fitting bra isn’t just about how it looks — it’s about how it feels. Proper adjustments can make the difference between a bra you can’t wait to take off and one that feels like it was made just for you. Here’s how to fine-tune your fit for all-day comfort and flawless support.

1. Start with the Band

Your band provides most of your bra’s support — not your straps!
It should feel snug and secure, but never restrictive.

  • You should be able to pull the band about one inch away from your body with one finger.

    • If you can pull it farther, the band is too big.

    • If you can’t pull it that far, it’s too small.

  • If your band rides up your back, it’s too loose — try fastening it tighter or consider a smaller band size.

  • New bras should fit firmly on the loosest hook, so you can tighten it as the elastic naturally relaxes with wear.

2. Adjust the Straps

Straps should offer gentle lift — not dig into your shoulders.
A good test:

  • You should be able to pull the strap about one inch off your shoulder with one finger.

    • If you can pull it higher, your straps are too loose.

    • If you can’t lift it that far, they’re too tight.

If your straps are slipping or digging even after adjusting, your band may be too big or the bra style may not suit your shape.

3. Check the Underwire Placement

Underwires should fully encase your breast tissue — never sit on top of it.

  • The wire should start just behind your breast tissue, under your arm, and lay flat against your ribcage all the way around.

  • If it’s poking, pressing, or sitting away from your body, the cup may be too small or the wire shape might not match your natural breast root.

4. Spot the Signs of Fit Issues

A few quick clues can tell you whether your adjustments are working:

  • Bulging or spillage at the top or sides? Check the band and the straps — if they are fitting properly, the cup is likely too small.

  • Gaping or extra space in the cups? Check the band and the straps — if they are fitting properly, either the cup is too big, or the style is too full for your shape.

  • Band riding up or feeling loose? Time to size down in the band.

  • Red marks can be a sign of a bad fit or bad style. It is good to keep in mind though, if you have sensitive skin, light red marks can be normal — just like those from jeans or shirt seams. What matters is comfort, not a completely mark-free fit.

5. When to Get a Professional Fitting

If you’ve made all the right adjustments and your bra still doesn’t feel quite right, it’s time for a professional fitting.
Even small changes in your body — like weight fluctuations, hormonal shifts, or new medications — can affect your bra size and shape. A fitting ensures you’re wearing the right size and style for your body.

At our boutique, we’re always here to help you find your perfect fit — because when your bra fits well, everything else just feels better.
