Your lingerie is more than just the first thing you put on in the morning — it’s an investment in your comfort, confidence, and style. To keep your bras and delicate lingerie looking beautiful and feeling supportive, proper care is essential. A few small habits can make a big difference in how long your favourite pieces last.
Start with the Rule of Three
When it comes to bras, we always recommend having at least three in your regular rotation:
• One to wear
• One to wash
• One to rest
Why the rest? Bras are made of elastic fabrics that need time to return to their natural shape after a day of wear. Giving your bra a day off allows the elastic to recover, which helps preserve its fit and support. Constant wear without rest can lead to stretched bands, warped cups, and worn-out straps much faster.
How Long Should a Bra Last, Really?
You may have heard the rule that a bra only lasts about six months — and while that can be true, the real answer is: it depends.
There are several key factors that affect how long your bra will truly last:
• Does it fit properly?
A bra that’s too small puts extra strain on the fabric and elastic, causing it to stretch out more quickly. A well-fitting bra supports your shape and its own longevity.
• What’s it made of?
High-quality materials hold up better over time. Cheaper bras may look good at first, but they often wear out faster. When it comes to lingerie, you really do get what you pay for.
• How often are you wearing it?
If you’re wearing the same bra every single day, it’s going to break down much faster — possibly even within six months or less. But if you rotate between a few and give each one a chance to rest, they’ll last much longer.
• How are you caring for it?
Washing in warm water, using harsh detergents, tossing bras in the dryer, or cramming them into drawers can all shorten their lifespan. Gentle care makes a huge difference. If you take care of your bras, they’ll take care of you.
So while six months may be the industry average, with the right fit, proper rotation, quality materials, and gentle care, your bras can last well beyond that.
Washing Tips to Keep Lingerie Looking Like New
1. Hand wash when possible.
Delicate fabrics like lace, silk, and mesh respond best to gentle hand washing in cool water with a mild detergent. It may take a few extra minutes, but your lingerie will thank you.
2. Use a lingerie bag for the machine.
If you do need to machine wash, always use a mesh lingerie bag and set your washer to the delicate cycle with cold water. Hook your bras before washing to avoid snagging.
3. Never use fabric softener.
It may seem like a good idea, but fabric softeners can break down the elastic in your lingerie and reduce its lifespan. Skip it altogether to keep things stretchy and supportive.
4. Always air dry.
Heat is the enemy of elasticity. Lay your bras and lingerie flat to dry, or hang them by the center gore (never the straps!) to avoid stretching. Avoid the dryer at all costs — even on low heat.
A Few Extra Tips
- Rotate regularly – Try not to wear the same bra two days in a row. Rotating helps preserve shape and support.
- Store with care – Stack bras with molded cups inside each other to help them hold their shape. Avoid folding them in half or cramming them into drawers.
- Keep an eye on wear and tear – If your bra is stretched out, riding up, or no longer fitting as it should, it might be time to replace it.
Your lingerie is a daily luxury that deserves thoughtful care. With just a little extra attention, your bras can stay supportive, beautiful, and comfortable for much longer than you might expect.
