When To Replace Your Bra

When To Replace Your Bra

When to Replace Your Bra (and the Signs It’s Time)

Parting with a favourite bra isn’t always easy. It’s likely been a go-to for everyday comfort, special occasions, and everything in between. But like any essential piece in your wardrobe, bras have a lifespan — and holding onto one past its prime can lead to discomfort, reduced support, and a less flattering fit.

So how do you know when it’s time to let go? Here are the telltale signs your bra is ready for retirement — and how to make sure your next one lasts even longer.

1. The Band Has Stretched Out

The band is the anchor of your bra — it should feel snug and supportive on the loosest hook when you first buy it. If you’re all the way to the tightest hook and still feeling loose or saggy support, your band has likely lost its elasticity. A stretched-out band = an unsupportive fit and not enough lift.

2. The Straps Are Falling Down (Even After Adjusting)

You shouldn’t have to hike your straps back into place all day. If you’ve tightened them to the max and they’re still slipping, the elastic may be worn out — or the bra may have simply lost its structure.

3. The Cups Are Gaping, Wrinkling, or Overflowing

Cups should hug your curves — not stand away from your body or overflow with spillage. If your cups have lost their shape or no longer fit like they used to, your bra is no longer doing its job. Bonus tip: if you’ve experienced weight changes, hormonal shifts, or pregnancy/postpartum, it’s normal for your size to fluctuate — and your bra needs to keep up.

4. The Underwire Is Poking or Twisted

This one’s non-negotiable. If your underwire is poking through the fabric or digging into your skin, it’s not just uncomfortable — it can also cause irritation or bruising. Once the wire breaks through or shifts, there’s no safe fix. It’s officially time to part ways.

5. It Just Feels… Off

Even if it’s not obviously damaged, sometimes your body just tells you: this doesn’t feel right anymore. Maybe the lift is gone, or the shape isn’t what you want. If you’re constantly reaching for other bras and this one stays buried in the drawer, that’s your sign.

How to Make Your Bras Last Longer

  • Rotate regularly: Avoid wearing the same bra two days in a row — let the elastic “rest.”

  • Wash gently: Hand wash or use a mesh lingerie bag on delicate with cold water.

  • Air dry only: Heat breaks down elastic fast — skip the dryer entirely.

  • Get properly fitted: A well-fitting bra wears more evenly and supports your body better.
